Circle. Hangouts. Instant Upload. Sparks. Huddle.
Tue, July 19 2011
It's The Google+ Project.
Currently, in its trial period (open by invitation only) Google+ aims to expand on what current social networks like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter do. It's a simplified interface that aims at improving the functionality of privacy settings, group interactions, and the "instant" access that is the backbone of social media.
Google+ looks to be the evolution of Facebook. If we think back to the first Facebook pages and the functionality that drove its growth there were many features that were added later. These features made privacy, sharing content, and group dynamics better. But, as with anything that is added later it's caused overhauls of the system, layout and design on a consistent basis.
As that question is commonly asked, "do we really need another social network???" The answer is yes, if it addresses missing functionality in the current system. Google+ has identified some large holes in the current social media scene.
A long-time user of Facebook for business and personal use, there are some things that Google+ has implemented that deserve a good look. In Google+, "
Circles" distinguish who "sees" what and how you communicate and share information. You can send and post to whole "Circles" or specific people but it is much clearer to manage. This is especially true for users who have hundreds of "friends".
With "
Hangouts", you can let specific friends or entire circles know that you're hanging out and your friends can join in with real live face-to-face chats.
With Instant Upload you can upload photos and video to a private gallery automatically and then just select the "Circle" it should go out to.
"
Sparks" is the most interesting to me from a business standpoint. One of the reasons Facebook advertising, whose rates raised 22% in the last quarter is so successful is because of the targeted information Facebook knows about its users likes and interests. It displays ads based on that information with impressive click results for the cost. But, Sparks can learn. In the beginning it will be fairly shallow but as you tell it more what you like and dislike it will be building a custom channel of information that Google could use to market products and services at a whole new level.
The "
Huddle" allows a group of conversations to happen on the same page all at once so you don't have the multiple posts. It's a group chat scenario that actually supports the real time transfer of information among multiple members.
Google+ is the natural evolution for the Google brand. If you had asked the question, "What is Google?" a few years ago you would have heard, "it's a search engine." It's more than a search engine now.
It's digital communication in every form.

2nd Annual 5 & 10 K Love Run & Walk - Eugene, Oregon
Fri, July 15 2011
We were approached earlier this year to design and develop a pro-bono web site for the 5 & 10K Love Run & Walk, a benefit event to raise awareness about Hypoplastic Left heart Syndrome. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a serious problem that involves several parts of the left side of the heart. In the United States, about 1000 babies with HLHS are born each year. Two thirds of the babies affected are boys.
The event was organized to honor the memory of Caleb Stecker who was born August 8, 2008 with a congenital heart defect called HLHS . Caleb received his treatment at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Sadly, he passed away at only 50 days old on September 28, 2008 due to complications following surgery.
If you are interested in supporting this cause the event details and registration are below. If you can't make it to the race day they are also accepting donations and you can purchase t-shirts online.

NEW Web site! Discount Motorcycle Parts, Inc.
Wed, June 22 2011
Revoalution & Internet Marketing Arts just finished a new web site for
Discount Motorcycle Parts, Inc. Discount Motorcycle Parts is the largest apparel and accessory shop in the Willamette Valley. In business since 1992, they are the go to location for riding gear.
The Web site is fully accessible through a content management system (CMS) and Discount Motorcycle Parts, Inc., has full control over keeping their content new and updated. They also have an events & rides page and an active
Facebook group to help keep the riding community informed of upcoming events and rides. If you haven't had the opportunity yet to stop in and see their location you'll be surprised to see the amazing selection of high quality gear.
And, Steve and Annette are genuinely amazing people who love their business and their customers.

Photo Shoot at Polara Studio - Portland, Oregon
Fri, June 10 2011
One of the best things about my job is getting to work on photo shoots with really talented photographer's and food stylists. Yesterday, Ryan and I made the short trip up to Portland to work on the shoot for a new food product coming out later this year. We were fortunate enough to book
Michael Shay for our natural light shoot and
Lucy Neilson as our Food Stylist. This was my third photo shoot with both at
Polara Studio and I can say they are AMAZING!
In any kind of food product marketing you want to do two things. First, you show the product in the best possible light. Second, you make it look delicious to motivate the shopper to pickup the package. Everyday we stop by the local supermarket to pick up groceries but you might not know how much effort goes into creating that perfect shot on the front of your cereal box or the chips in your cupboard.
We are faced with a plethora of choices and information each time we enter the grocery store. Most designs are tested by focus groups on a variety of elements to make sure the product looks good, tastes good, sounds good and meets the need of the target consumer.
Yesterday, we got
THAT shot. We showed the "Hero" and made it look delicious. A big Thank you to Polara, Michael and Lucy. It was a pleasure and I'm looking forward to the next shoot!
